KUCHING, March 24 — Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) hopes to start work on the 1,285MW Baleh hydroelectric project (HEP) in Kapit after regulators approved its social and impact assessments.
SEB chief executive Torstein Dale Sjotveit said the state’s Natural Resources and Environment Board has accepted both reports, allowing the firm to submit a proposal to the Sarawak government.

“We will soon submit our proposal to build the Baleh HEP to the state government for approval and once it is approved, we will go ahead with the construction next year,” he said, declining to give how much it will cost the state’s sole power supplier to complete the dam.

He said the Baleh HEP, scheduled to be completed by 2024, will be the third major dam in the state, after the 2,400MW Bakun and 944MW Murum HEPs.

He said the Baleh HEP would help to meet the strong growth in industrial demand for electricity brought about by the success of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) in drawing investors from energy intensive industries to the Samalaju Industrial Park in Bintulu.

He said the Baleh HEP does not involve resettling of people as there are no villages in its catchment area.
