MEDITATION 30. I have often wondered about the intense loyalty Jesus commands.

I realise in part that it comes from his accomodating nature, his acceptance of those with unpublishable yesterdays, his understanding of human frailty. We see it with that pr******te, the one who bought a Roja Haute Luxe Parfums from SAKS Fifth Avenue and poured it on his head. That perfume cost $3500. It has gold flakes. It's the type Judas would have loved to get his sordid fingers on. She knelt at the feet of Jesus broken, weeping, possibly shattered. (Luke‬ ‭7:36-‬39)

Brokenness is when life completely overwhelms you, when you have no strength left in you, not an ounce. There's so much pain and anguish on the inside. So much turmoil. You feel helpless. As you lie prostrate before God your being supplicates the Almighty in groans. You know you've reached the end of yourself. It's the end of the road. Only God can put you back together again.

Remember the five-time divorcee with a live-in boyfriend... It's quite possible Jesus was the first man she ever met who didn't try to date her or sleep with her. He accorded her respect. You can see it in their engagement. They were discussing politics. Her marital status was a minor footnote in their discussion. She could disclose her personal history because she felt safe, felt free. No condemnation.

If Jesus can accommodate a Peter, a Thomas, a Leke Alder... Surely Leke Alder can accommodate other imperfect lives. We must immitate Jesus in character. That’s Christianity.
