A brief history of kogi state ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡

Creation and Origin:
Kogi State was created on 27 August 1991 by the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida. It was carved out from parts of the then Kwara and Benue States to reunite people who had shared history and identity but were divided by earlier state reorganisations. Before its creation, the area was part of the colonial-era Kabba Province and later divided in the 1976 state creation exercise.

Capital and Name:
The state capital is Lokoja, one of Nigeriaโ€™s oldest towns and historic administrative centre during colonial rule. Because the Niger and Benue rivers meet at Lokoja, Kogi is popularly called the โ€œConfluence State.โ€

People and Location:
Kogi lies in North-Central Nigeria and is uniquely positioned, bordering many states. It is home to diverse ethnic groups including the Igala, Ebira, and Okun (a Yoruba subgroup) among others, reflecting a rich cultural mix.

Political Evolution:
Since its creation, Kogi has been governed by a mix of military administrators and elected civilian governors, with the first gubernatorial election held in December 1991.

Thatโ€™s a quick overview of how Kogi State came to be and its key historical highlights.
