Is Marketing Evil?

Marketing is everywhere—on your screens, in your inbox, and even subtly influencing your decisions. But does this make it inherently bad or even evil?

The truth is, marketing, like most tools, is neutral. It’s not about what marketing is but how it’s used.

Let’s tweak the question a bit:
Is marketing evil? Maybe not.
But are marketers evil? Well… some of them, yes.

Here’s why: marketing is powerful. It influences decisions, changes perceptions, and sometimes nudges people to act in ways they wouldn’t have without it.

Take for example: marketing targeted at kids to glamorize smoking. A generation ago, cigarette ads featured cartoons and celebrities to make smoking look “cool.” The result? Many kids picked up a deadly habit they might never have considered otherwise.

This is where marketing becomes harmful—when it prioritizes profit over ethics, manipulating vulnerable groups to make choices that hurt them in the long run.

Responsible marketers focus on serving rather than manipulating.

They offer real value, communicate transparently, respect their audience’s autonomy.

What do you think? Is marketing only as good (or bad) as the person behind it? Let us know in the comments. 👇
