Tennis legend was recently awarded with the 2021 Wilma Rudolph Courage Award, which honors a female athlete who serves as an inspiration and role model by overcoming adversity and exhibiting extraordinary courage in her athletic performance.

Wilma Rudolph was a world-record-holding Olympic track and field star who came to be known as the “fastest woman in the world.” When she returned from the 1960 summer Olympics, where she won three gold medals, she refused to attend her homecoming parade if it was not integrated. She stood by her morals and went on to teach sports at several community centers before later being inducted into the US Olympic Hall of Fame.

Today, her spirit and legacy live on with athletes like Naomi Osaka whose efforts to raise awareness around social justice and mental health issues are noteworthy and needed.
