The Woman Nobody Suspected: Key Lessons from the Janet Igohia Story for Edo Communities

Danger does not always wear a mask or hide inside forests.
Sometimes, it lives next door. Sometimes, it smiles at neighbors, attends religious gatherings and blends quietly into everyday life.
That was why the arrest of Janet Igohia in Taraba State shocked many Nigerians and sparked conversations far beyond the North-Central region.
According to reports by the Nigerian Army and several national media platforms, Janet Igohia was arrested in January 2024 while allegedly attempting to collect ₦1.5 million ransom linked to a kidnapping operation in Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State.
Military authorities said troops acted on intelligence and arrested her at the ransom point.
Reports also linked her to criminal figures associated with the late Benue gang leader, Terwase Akwaza, popularly known as “Gana.”
But beyond the headlines lies a deeper lesson many communities, especially in Edo State, cannot afford to ignore.
For residents of Auchi and other parts of Edo State battling recurring kidnappings and highway abductions, the story feels painfully familiar.
Fear has gradually become part of daily life.
Families now travel with anxiety. Business owners close early.
Parents worry whenever loved ones journey across lonely roads. Communities that once slept peacefully now live cautiously.
And one painful reality continues to emerge from many kidnapping cases: criminals often survive because somebody within society quietly helps them.
Sometimes through information leaks. Sometimes through silence. Sometimes through ransom negotiations. Sometimes through collaboration hidden behind innocent faces.
That is why the Janet Igohia story should not only be seen as another crime report. It should be seen as a warning.
A warning against glorifying quick wealth. A warning against blind loyalty to criminal lifestyles. A warning that evil does not always look dangerous at first glance.
Most importantly, it is a reminder for communities to remain vigilant. Not every smiling neighbor is harmless and not every familiar face carries good intentions.
Security is not only the responsibility of soldiers and police officers. Communities themselves must become more observant, united and willing to expose suspicious activities before innocent lives are destroyed.
Because in the end, the most dangerous criminals are often not the ones society fears immediately.
They are the ones nobody suspects.

Allah says in the Qur’an:
“And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice.” — Surah As-Saffat 37:107
The verse refers to the ram provided by Allah as a substitute sacrifice for Prophet Ibrahim (AS), showing the sacred significance of the animal in worship.
Allah also says:
“It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is piety from you that reaches Him...” — Surah Al-Hajj 22:37
Let us therefore honor the spirit of Eid with reverence, kindness and obedience to Allah, avoiding every act that promotes cruelty, gambling or misuse of sacrificial animals.

SHOCKING: Beheaded Nursing Student Found in Imo Hostel Room
A female nursing student, identified as Wendy Achumba, has been found beheaded in her off-campus hostel room in Umulogho Community, Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State.
The victim, said to be a student of the College of Nursing in Umuadara and an indigene of Abia State, was reportedly discovered after neighbours forced open her door when she failed to respond to repeated knocks.
Community sources disclosed that the student had recently completed her midwifery programme and was undergoing post-basic training before the tragic incident occurred.
Her mutilated body was reportedly found inside the room, while her mobile phone was said to be missing.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, said police operatives visited the scene and moved the body to a mortuary.
He added that investigations have commenced to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing and bring those responsible to justice.
The police further appealed to residents and students to remain calm as efforts continue to track down the perpetrators.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named Prof. Segun Aina, a renowned Computer Engineering scholar at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, as the next Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
The announcement was made on Thursday through a statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Prof. Aina, who is 39 years old, is expected to take over the leadership of the examination body after the current Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, completes his tenure on July 31, 2026.
