TOPIC: WHY THE SABBATH REST.

TEXT: Gen 2:2-3; 2Sam 7:1-2.

Sabbath means to cease or stop and rest. That means, “Work, stop and rest.” The Sabbath day as a day of resting is one of the ten commandments because God wants us to take a pattern from Him.

The number 7 in the Bible is a symbol for; completeness, perfection, and divine fullness.
God completed His work of creation and rested on the 7th day; He blessed and sanctified it. God intentionally rested on, not because He was exhausted, but rather He wants it to be routine standard pattern of work and rest for us to follow. He wants us to take a weekly break from our daily work and stress.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SABBATH REST.
Sabbath rest doesn’t mean that we must worship God on Saturdays. (Rm 13:4-5).

In Matt 12:28, Jesus clearly says that the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath. He pointed out to the Pharisees that the work of necessity must be done on the Sabbath day as opposed to their adherence to the strict rules of the law that prohibits doing certain works on the Sabbath day.
* Sabbath rest is about a divine law of completing a cycle of activities or events. (Completeness).
* The Sabbath rest includes ceasing from your hard labour and also from your daily anxieties and worries.
* You consciously and intentionally decide to turn away from striving, struggling and hustling to make things happen by your own efforts, and trusting God for your daily needs.
* It is a time to intentionally take out some time from your work in order to recharge spiritually, mentally and physically.
* Sabbath rest is a time for you to stop fretting, being envious of others, and being content and grateful to God for His loving kindness towards you. (Psa 37:1-7).
