Reproductive healthcare in Nigeria is often treated like a taboo conversation, but silence has never protected people from harm.
Behind every statistic are real lives affected by stigma, misinformation, restrictive systems, unsafe practices, and limited access to care.
These conversations are so important, they affect how people access healthcare, make decisions about their bodies, and survive medical emergencies.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing reproductive healthcare in Nigeria today?

Let’s be honest.
Abortions don’t happen in a vacuum.
They happen because:
Contraception isn’t accessible or fails, s*x education is poor or nonexistent, s*xual violence happens, people are not financially or emotionally ready, and pregnancies become medically risky.
Now remove safe, regulated services from that reality…
What you get is not fewer abortions.
You get unsafe ones.
People will always find a way, the difference is whether they survive it.
Access to abortion services is not about morality debates.
It’s about safety, healthcare, and staying alive.
That’s the part we don’t talk about enough.

We cannot talk about global maternal health without talking about unsafe abortion.
Unsafe abortion is a catastrophic public health crisis. According to the WHO and the Guttmacher Institute, up to 13.2% of all maternal deaths worldwide are caused by unsafe abortions. Beyond the tragic loss of life, roughly 7 million people are hospitalized every year for severe, preventable injuries like sepsis and hemorrhage.
This is an epidemic of inequity. 97% of these unsafe procedures happen in developing nations, disproportionately impacting the poorest and most marginalized individuals who are blocked from safe healthcare.
The medical consensus is clear: unsafe abortions are 100% preventable. Expanding access to safe abortion, contraception, and post-abortion care is not just a rights issue, it is a critical public health intervention.
