A Letter to a Divided World

There is a quiet, devastating tragedy unfolding in our hearts every single day, and its name is Comparison.It is a silent thief. It takes the happiest souls and turns them bitter.

It takes people who achieved their dreams and whispers that they failed, simply because they looked to the left or to the right. It makes us blind to the very teachers, pastors, and leaders we desperately need, just because they do not wear the jersey of the party we chose to support.But the most heartbreaking evil of comparison is this: it makes good people with pure hearts pray for another human being’s downfall.

Think about it. We see it every day in football. Two titans, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, poured their sweat, their blood, and their entire youth into giving us magic. Yet, a fan with a pure heart will sit in the dark, gripping their chest, desperately praying that Ronaldo misses a penalty or that Messi falls on his face. Not because they hate that man, but because they think hurting one is the only way to protect the other.If Lionel and Cristiano sat together in a quiet room today and read the bile we spit at each other in their names, their eyes would fill with tears. Their hearts would break. They gave us their entire lives, and we used their greatness to divide ourselves.

We turned their beautiful gifts into weapons of hatred, envy, and jealousy.And look at us, we have carried this exact same poison straight into the sanctuary of God.We do it with our churches.

We do it with our pastors. We split into factions, arguing who is deeper, who is more eloquent, who is more powerful. We have forgotten the ancient, tear-stained cry of the Apostle Paul to a broken, divided church:“Who is Paul, and who is Apollos? Only servants... I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.”Paul and Apollos were never fighting each other. They were crying together, working together, and bleeding together for the exact same harvest. They were on the same team! When we compare them, we stab the very hands that feed us. One leader is sent to plant a seed in your brokenness; another is sent to water your dry season.

Why must we starve our souls just because we refuse to drink from a well we didn't dig?Comparison makes you wish your downfall on people who don't even know you exist. It makes you side with Part A and hate Part B, even when Part B has never offended you. It forces innocent people to develop the fruits of the flesh just to prove their loyalty to someone they love.Happiness can only be found when you stop comparing yourself, and your heroes, with others.Let us stop tearing down Paul to praise Apollos.

Let us stop praying for a downfall just to win an argument. Look at the walls you have built. Look at the bitterness you have allowed into your heart.Let us learn to love greatness without needing someone else to fail, before comparison destroys the very fabric of our humanity.
