In Japan, which experiences more than 1,500 earthquakes annually and is very susceptible to them, the idea of elevated homes during quakes is garnering a lot of interest. Two main strategies are used in the development of solutions for raised homes during earthquakes. One of the businesses developing this idea, Air Danshin, has developed a system where sensors within the home identify earthquake activity and transmit a signal to an outside air compressor. The house is then lifted above the ground and protected by the compressor's compressed air injection into the home's foundation.

On the other side, architects are looking at how magnetic levitation might be used in building. Although Japan's high-speed bullet trains are already equipped with this technology, its implementation in structures is still in the conceptual stage. It is envisioned that homes might be elevated above the earth using magnetic levitation, reducing the effect of seismic activity.
