From Learning to Living | Impact from Our Community Life Skills Program

What began six weeks ago as a simple gathering at COCIN LCC Utan has grown into a powerful journey of transformation.

At Charis Healthcare and Community Support Initiative (CHARIS), we are excited to share the impact from the grand finale of our Community Life Skills Program a moment filled with reflection, celebration, and inspiring testimonies.

Participants shared how the sessions have helped them set clear and meaningful goals, make wiser decisions, communicate assertively, and build confidence in navigating everyday challenges. Many also expressed a deeper understanding of how to care for their mental health—embracing healthier habits and prioritizing their overall wellbeing.

Beyond the learning, what truly stood out was the growth in mindset and the courage to live differently. Over the course of six weeks, individuals moved from uncertainty to clarity, from hesitation to confidence, and from surviving to intentionally thriving.

The presentation of Certificates of Participation marked not just the end of a program, but the beginning of a new journey one where participants are equipped with practical life skills to positively impact their lives, families, and communities.

This is the impact we believe in. This is the change we are committed to.

Day Three at the Bokkos IDP Camp was more than a conclusion it was a moment of deep reflection, release, and renewal. As we wrapped up the Enhancing Mental Health of People in Incarceration and Displacement (EMHPID) Project, the atmosphere was filled with a quiet strength that comes from being seen, supported, and given space to heal.

Over the past days, we had listened, engaged, and walked alongside these resilient children and families. But on this final day, something extraordinary happened. Together with the children, we created a symbolic moment of healing each child was invited to lay down their burdens, their fears, pain, and unspoken hurts at the “cross,” representing a place of mercy, forgiveness, and reconciliation. It was a powerful expression of release. Some children closed their eyes in silence, others whispered softly, and a few simply stood still but in that moment, you could feel a shift. A weight lifted. A beginning of inner peace.

One story that stood out was of a young child who had remained withdrawn since Day One. On this final day, after participating in the session, they stepped forward, dropped their “burden,” and for the first time, smiled freely and joined the other children. It was a simple moment, yet deeply profound a reminder that healing, even when quiet, is real.

Beyond the emotional impact, we also extended humanitarian support, ensuring that care went beyond words to tangible expressions of love and compassion. This outreach would not have been possible without the generous support of the New Africa Fund (NAF) through the Africa Impact Fundraising Grant Program. We are deeply grateful for their commitment to improving access to mental health care for vulnerable populations.

We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to the leadership and camp directors at the Bokkos IDP Camp for their openness, coordination, and unwavering support throughout this outreach. Your partnership made it possible to reach the hearts that needed it most.

Implemented by Quintessential Healthcare Centre in collaboration with Charis Healthcare & Community Support Initiative, this project has reminded us that trauma healing is not just about interventions it is about presence, compassion, and creating spaces where people, especially children, can rediscover hope.

As we leave, we do not just close a program we leave behind seeds of healing, resilience, and the assurance that no one is alone on their journey to wholeness.
