Women and Trousers
Yesterday I decided to go through comments and rejoinders to the post I made on the list of falsehoods we need to emancipate ourselves from. . . hmmm! I just don't know how best to express how I felt and still feeling.
I had to sit back and wonder where we are getting it wrong in our Christian teachings.
The one that even got me sad is on trousers. Imagine thinking that wearing of trousers for female is a sin. Just imagine something like that.
And to make it even more annoying, the reason given was based on an extract of the Jewish laws found in Deuteronomy 22.
In Deut 22 you will find laws on how you will build your house, the way you must cultivate your crops, how to handle animals for farming, how to dress etc.
Verse 5:
"A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this." NIV.
It was just this verse, and boom. . . that was how female trousers made it into their interpretation.
Sincerely, I am even angry that I am writing this post because this whole talk on trousers being sinful for ladies is just so childish.
In Old Testament times, men and women wore clothing that was superficially similar – long robes and wrapping garments were common for both sexes.
The specific types of garments and the way in which they were worn made a clear distinction between the sexes, and this command instructs God’s people to respect those distinctions.
This is not a command against women wearing a garment that in some ways might be common between men and women; it is a command against dressing in a manner which deliberately blurs the lines between the sexes.
This is why I prefer the translation from New Jerusalem Bible, it brought out the true meaning of what that text was trying to say. Deuteronomy 22:5 reads thus:
"A woman must not dress like a man, nor a man like a woman; anyone who does this is detestable to Yahweh your God
