I didn't forget about chapter 2.

26/08/2025

‎The ocean had its own song—steady, endless, unbothered. Each wave curled and broke like a breath, pulling at the shore. I sat with my knees drawn up, letting the rhythm drown the noise in my head. Memories flickered through me like torn pages. This beach was the only place that gave me peace.

‎Until the laughter came. Loud, shrill, reckless. My classmates’ voices carried on the wind, tangled with music and shouts. They weren’t here to heal. They were here to forget.

‎A shiver rippled over my arms as a wave licked the sand. I smiled faintly at the chill—then jumped when a shadow blocked the light.

‎“Seems like you didn’t come here to get laid.”
‎May’s laugh rang out as she pressed a cup into my hand.

‎I lifted it, sipped, and immediately choked. The bitter burn tore down my throat. I spat into the sand.
‎“May!”

‎She bent over laughing, curls bouncing around her face, eyes brighter than the stars above.

‎“I told you I don’t want to get drunk,” I snapped, glaring at her.

‎“You can’t blame me.” She shrugged, all mischief. “Lyra, this is a school party. Nobody wants a sulking saint or a God save me Jesus baby.” She tugged at my hand. “Loosen up. Have fun.”

‎“I am having fun,” I muttered, though my eyes kept scanning the crowd. Still no sign of him. May’s gaze followed mine, and her grin softened.

‎“He’s here. Somewhere. You’ll find him.” She dragged me toward the bonfire, where half the grade circled in chaos. The music pounded harder here, the bass rattling my chest.

‎We sat near a group of girls. Some smoked, others clung to boys who weren’t theirs, mouths locked in messy desperation. The air smelled of sweat, smoke, and spilled alcohol. A girl moaned loudly against her boyfriend’s ear, sharp as a hyena. Heat crept to my cheeks. Did they have no shame?

‎“Hey.” May nudged me. “Stop staring.” She laughed under her breath.

‎“What stare?” I forced a laugh.

‎She pointed to my drink. “Want me to get you something softer? No alcohol?”

‎“Yes, please. And don’t mix it this time,” I warned. She smirked and slipped into the crowd.

‎I stretched, my legs aching from sitting too long. But my thoughts kept circling back, sharp as knives. Change your classes, Miss Lyra. Your scores are too low for medicine.

‎Too low. After years of sleepless nights, flashcards, skipped outings, endless pages. What more did they want? My head on a platter? My life as payment?

‎“Lyra.”

‎The voice snapped me back. I turned—and froze.

‎Valerie. Vanessa. Elvery.

‎The school’s untouchables. The ones who bent rules, broke them, and laughed while teachers looked the other way.

‎Please let it not be me, I begged silently. But Valerie’s painted smile told me otherwise.

‎“Where’s your plus one?” she asked, folding her arms. Her manicured nails glinted in the firelight.

‎My mouth went dry. “I… we came together, but I think he left.”

‎“She’s so clueless.” Vanessa snickered.

‎“Really, Lyra?” Valerie tilted her head, voice dripping with mockery. “You thought Simon actually wanted to es**rt you? You look like a hundred-year-old grandma. And what is that smell? Did you even bathe?”

‎Laughter rippled through the circle. Heat burned in my face. My fists curled at my sides.
‎“Yes, I bathed,” I whispered. “This is the best outfit I have. My taste isn’t the same as yours, but that doesn’t make it ugly.”

‎Their laughter cut sharper this time, slicing into me. Strangers turned to stare.

‎“Simon made a bet,” Valerie drawled. “That he’d ask you out, then dump you at the party. And you—jumping, squealing like you’d won the lottery—really believed him. Do you think Simon is mad enough to want you? To smell you?” She pinched her nose in mock disgust.

‎The tears slipped before I could stop them.

‎Valerie stepped closer, her perfume thick and suffocating. “Don’t cry, baby.” She brushed at my cheek. I flinched back, scrubbing her touch away.

‎Her smile thinned. “It’s called a bet for a reason. And we’re here to collect.”

‎“I don’t want anything to do with you,” I said, sharper than I meant.

‎Her smirk deepened. Elvery reached into her bag and pulled out a bottle, metal cap gleaming. Gin.

‎“If you don’t want your cute little texts to Simon all over group chat…” Valerie trailed off, twisting the bottle in her hand. “Then drink.”

‎The weight of my phone in my pocket was heavier than stone. My fingers shook as I took the bottle.

‎I lifted it. The stench slapped me first—chemical, harsh, strong. My stomach knotted.

‎But their eyes pinned me down, each waiting.

‎I drank at a go.

‎The burn was instant, ripping down my throat, clawing into my chest. Tears blurred my vision. I gagged, but forced it down until my body revolted. The bottle slipped from my grip, thudding into the sand.

‎The bonfire spun, sparks streaking the night. My knees buckled.

‎Vanessa’s laugh cut through the pounding music. “Weaker than I thought.”

‎I dropped, palms sinking into gritty sand. My head swam. The whispers swelled louder, sharper, until they were knives in my ears. I clapped my hands over them, desperate to block it all out.

‎Valerie’s grip yanked them away. “Don’t even think about calling attention,” she hissed, sugar-coated poison.

‎Panic surged. I twisted free—then pain exploded at the base of my neck. Elvery’s hand.

‎The ground rushed up, and my face slammed into sand. Grit filled my mouth, my teeth grinding against it. A violent tremor ripped through me, rattling bones I couldn’t control.

‎They pinned me until the shudders ebbed. My breath came ragged, my body heavy, useless.

‎“Pathetic.” Elvery’s lip curled. “Can’t even handle one drink. What are you?”

‎Around me, eyes stared—some pitying, some hungry, some blank with cruel curiosity. My skin burned under their gaze.

‎Valerie smirked, turning away. “We’re not done with you yet.”

‎The bonfire crackled. My body trembled in the dirt.
