Court sentences armed robber to d3ath for gang-r@pe of woman and two teenage girls in Calabar

A High Court of Cross River State presided over by Justice Blessing Egwu on Monday sentenced Okon Ekpo Effiong to d3ath for acts of aggravated assault, r@pe and armed robbery.

Effiong, 33, had alongside four others gang r@ped a lady and two teenage girls after an armed robbery attack.

The attack occurred on April 27th, 2024 along Mount Zion Street in Calabar South Local Government Area with valuables also carted away.

Justice Egwu held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt hence the decision of the Court to hand the d3ath penalty.

Effiong and one of his partners were arrested. The partner d!ed in custody while three other remain at large.

For the prosecution, the judgment which they hope will serve as deterrence, is a welcome development, and the product of teamwork, the Director of Public Prosecution in Cross River State, Okoi Ukam Esq, told Cross River Watch.

“Deterrence has always been the key message when we treat cases,” he said, adding that; “if we used to treat such matters with kids gloves before, that has changed in this administration. Our records are very clear on that.”

He attributed the success of the prosecution led by Joseph Akpajung Esq to the efforts and leadership of the Attorney General and Justice Commissioner, Ededem Ani Esq whom he says has refused to bow to pressures to withdraw cases like this when petitions are filed.

“The Attorney General read a riot act to prosecutors. Once you get your brief, you must research and work on it, so, this is not different, I commend the Attorney General for his leadership and the staff for their commitment,” he said.

Furthermore, Mr. Ukam commended the Cross River State Police Command led by CP Rashid Afegbua and the gender unit for its work.

“For such cases, like this prisoner, yes, he is now a prisoner, who has been sentenced to d3ath, investigations are the key to successful prosecution. I commend the police and its gender unit which has been working with us. They have done really well,” he added.

The Principal Counsel, Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, James Ibor Esq who monitored the case explained why the sentence was preferred despite the campaignsfor the abolishment of the d3ath sentence.

“We have what we call sentencing guidelines and the Court followed them in this case," Ibor explained.

"After the conviction, during the sentencing hearing, the matter of aggravated assault came up.

“Here you have a scenario where it wasn’t just armed robbery where they made away with valuables, they s3xually molested children, one of whom was on her period.

"Then, they took their aunt to an uncompleted building and took turns in ra**ng her. Therefore it is beyond just the crime, but the impact other actions have on the victims.

“Already, the maximum penalty for armed robbery is d3ath. The aggravated circumstances which saw the victims being harmed further with their phones even used by the suspects made it worse for them."

The convict said that he regrets his actions and feels the sentence was excessive.

The law provides him an option of an appeal up to the Supreme Court.

His counsel, Bassey Otop Esq, who was assigned from the Centre for Citizens’ Rights and Office of the Public Defender, also said the judgment will be appealed.

One of the victims, (name withheld for pro) said the memory still hurts but is soothed a bit now knowing Mr. Effiong is put away for good.

She commended the prosecution team whom she said never asked her for support and did their job diligently.

"I am happy and I thank everyone who ensured this came to pass. I thank my brother, the prosecutor who handled this case well. All of you and those who kept watch so that it doesn’t go sideways, I thank you all.

“I am happy, but there isn’t much I can’t say now than I hope the rest are caught too.”

“I never went on a robbery without praying first.” - How Ex-Robber Who Spent 25 Years Behind Bars Finds Redemption

Kolawole Temitope, once a notorious armed robber, has shared his journey from a life of crime to becoming an evangelist after spending more than25 yearsin and out of Nigerian prisons. Born in 1969, Temitope said he began stealing as a child and was first arrested at 17. Over the years, he was jailed 12 times, learning more criminal skills behind bars and leading robbery gangs that targeted homes and churches across Nigeria and neighbouring countries.

He described Nigerian prisons as harsh and unequal, where real reform is rare and criminalbehaviouris often reinforced. Despite repeated incarcerations, he said he never truly repented while in custody and sometimes returned to crime immediately after release.

Temitope said his turning point came on September 6, 2021, when he found and read a shortChristianmessage that deeply moved him and led him toabandoncrime completely. Since then, he says he has not stolen again and now preaches the gospel independently, including in prisons.

Now living in Lagos, Temitope struggles to survive as an ex-convict, facing rejection, poverty, and the responsibility of raising his young son alone. Despite these challenges, he says he is committed to his new life, viewing his survival—while all 42 of his formerassociatesare dead—as an act of mercy and a reason to warn others against a life of crime.

After He Was Dismissed For Sexual Offences, Teacher Came With Gun & Shot Two Fellow Teachers

A wave of grief and disbelief swept through the Ntabankulu community in the Eastern Cape after a brutal attack unfolded at Ntabankulu Primary School on January 22, 2026. A former teacher, who was facing serious charges of sexually assaulting learners, allegedly returned to the school and launched a deadly shooting that claimed the lives of two educators and left another seriously injured.

According to preliminary reports, the suspect, who had been released on bail, arrived at the school shortly after midday. It is believed that he gained access to the premises by cutting through the perimeter fence. Once inside, he headed directly to the school’s kitchen area, where three staff members were present at the time.

Without warning, the armed suspect opened fire. One educator was fatally wounded and died instantly at the scene. A second teacher was rushed for urgent medical treatment but later succumbed to their injuries. The third victim survived the attack and was transported to a medical facility after sustaining gunshot wounds.

In the aftermath of the shooting, the suspect reportedly turned the firearm on himself. Emergency responders later confirmed that he had died at the scene.

Members of the South African Police Service from the Ntabankulu station swiftly secured the school grounds, closing off the area to allow forensic experts to conduct a comprehensive investigation. Authorities are now probing the full circumstances of the incident, including whether the suspect breached any conditions attached to his bail.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana described the attack as deeply distressing and confirmed the sequence of events in an official statement. She noted that the tragedy has left the community shaken and in mourning.

Eastern Cape Acting Police Commissioner, Major-General Thandiswa Kupiso, strongly condemned the violence and conveyed heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased educators, their colleagues, and the wider school community.

The Eastern Cape Department of Education has also responded, pledging immediate support for those affected. Department head Sharon Maasdorp announced that trauma counselling and psychological services will be made available to learners, staff, and families within the Alfred Ndzo East district to help them cope with the emotional impact.

Despite the devastating loss, the school is expected to reopen the following week, with enhanced support and safety measures in place to protect pupils and staff as the community begins the difficult process of healing.

Shocking but Breaking

A man walked into a hospital, said he wanted to die — and days later, carried out one of the most horrifying crimes imaginable.

This is the story of Andre Thomas.

In March 2004, Andre was spiraling.
Severe mental illness.
Obsessed with religion.
Drinking cold medicine like water.
Voices. Visions. Delusions.

On March 5, 2004, a friend rushed him to a mental health clinic after he started having violent episodes. He told the staff:

“If y’all don’t help me, I’m going to step in front of a bus.”

They told him to go to the emergency room.
He didn’t.

Weeks later, on March 25, Andre stabbed himself in the chest and finally showed up at Texoma Medical Center in Grayson County, Texas.
He told staff he was trying to “cross into heaven.”

Doctors wanted to keep him for psychiatric evaluation.
But they had to wait for a judge to approve it.
While they waited… he walked out. No one stopped him.

14 March 27, 2004 — Two days later

Andre knocked on the door of his ex-wife, Laura Thomas.

Inside the home:
• Laura, age 20
• Their 4-year-old son, Andre Jr.
• Laura’s 1-year-old daughter, Leah

He came with three knives.
Why three?

Because, he later claimed, he didn’t want to “cross-contaminate” the blood.
He believed they were possessed.
He believed demons were living inside their bodies.
He said he was freeing them.

What he did to them is beyond human.
So brutal, their ribs were cut open.
He tried to remove Laura’s heart — accidentally taking part of her lung.
He removed both children’s hearts.
Then he placed a dollar bill next to the bodies, exposing the pyramid and eye, a symbol he believed was evil and controlling him.

Then?

He laid beside their bodies and stabbed himself again.
When he didn’t die… he put their organs in his pockets and walked home.

At home, he:
• Washed the knives
• Changed clothes
• Called Laura’s parents
• Left a voicemail saying:

“I need y’all’s help… I think I’m in hell.”

He confessed.
Turned himself in.

Days later, while alone in a jail cell, he ripped his own eye out with his bare hands and quoted Mark 9:47 — the Bible verse about plucking out the eye that causes you to sin.

Doctors couldn’t reattach it.
He was diagnosed with schizophrenia and ruled incompetent.
After 47 days in a mental hospital, he stood trial.

His defense team begged the court to consider insanity.
The judge said his mental illness was made worse by drug abuse — and denied it.

14 March 2005 — Andre Thomas was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death.

But it didn’t end there.

December 9, 2008 — He removed his other eye.
And ate it.
He said he didn’t want the government to read his thoughts.

To this day…
Andre Thomas sits on death row in Texas.
His ex*****on has been rescheduled multiple times.

We received N1 million for each virgin killed for ritual, murder suspect reportedly told police

The Anambra Police Command says it has arrested a suspect, Friday Akonobi, in connection with the alleged abduction and murder of a six-year-old girl from Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

The command’s spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement issued in Awka and made available to reporters on Sunday.

Mr Ikenga, a superintendent of police, said that operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu, acting on credible information, arrested Mr Akonobi, 28, in the early hours of 17 January in Awka.

According to him, the arrest is linked to the abduction and murder of Ozioma Nwankwo, who was abducted on 10 May 2025, in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi.

He said that preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect was allegedly involved in the crime, which was also connected to an Enugu-based alleged native doctor.

The native doctor’s full name is Levi Onyeka Obieze Obu. He is popularly known as Ozo Ezeani as well as “E dey play E dey show.”

Mr Ikenga said that during interrogation, the suspect confessed to committing the crime in collaboration with four other accomplices currently at large.

He said that the suspect told the police that the victim was taken to Enugu and handed over to the alleged native doctor.

The police spokesperson said the suspect also confessed that he and his accomplices acted as agents for Mr Ezeani and were allegedly paid N1 million for each virgin brought to him.

According to Mr Ikenga, the suspect further stated that the victim was murdered and used for ritual purposes.

He said the suspect also disclosed that the alleged native doctor had since been arrested by operatives of the Enugu State Police Command.

Mr Ikenga assured the public that efforts were being intensified to arrest the remaining suspects and ensure that all those involved were brought to justice.

PREMIUM TIMES earlier reported how Mr Obu allegedly buried several people in a pit, including a pregnant woman, apparently for ritual purposes.
The incident happened on 26 May 2025 at Umumba Ndiagu, a community in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria’s South-east.

Mr Obu was arraigned in a magistrate’s court in Enugu in August last year on seven counts of conspiracy, kidnapping and murder, alongside two others — Sebastine Offor, the second defendant, and Ejike Odinwakpa, the third defendant.
The Chief Magistrate, O.S. Chukwuani, had ordered that the defendants be remanded until 20 August and the case file transferred to the director of public prosecutions for legal advice and prosecution at a high court.

After Mr Obu’s alleged criminal activities went public, he attempted to flee Nigeria.

But was arrested by personnel of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) at the Badagry-Seme Border Area of Lagos.
Days later, NIS authorities handed him over to the Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Police Force.

The native doctor was subsequently moved from Lagos to the Enugu State Command of the police, hours later, to face prosecution
