For four years, some people have done little beyond travelling abroad, spending lavishly, and taking care of their immediate families and a few loyal associates yet Nigerians are still being asked to reward that leadership with another term.
Meanwhile, ordinary citizens are struggling to survive. Civil servants can barely afford one decent meal a day. Ministries are starved of funds, capital projects are abandoned, and even critical sectors like healthcare continue to suffer from neglect.
Let us be honest with ourselves: if this level of hardship and insensitivity can happen during a first term a period when leaders are usually expected to prove themselves and earn re-election through performance then what exactly should Nigerians expect in a second term?
Traditionally, leaders tend to become more relaxed after securing re-election. But for any government to preside over this degree of economic pain in its very first tenure raises serious concerns.
If Nigerians allow hardship, hunger, and poor governance to become normal without demanding accountability, then tomorrow’s regrets may come too late.
The future of this country depends not just on those in power, but on the decisions citizens make with their votes.
