LOVE AND BETRAYAL
Episode 21: Secrets in the Blood
Amina stood by the window, staring at the city skyline. The lights of Lagos blinked like fireflies, but tonight, they brought her no comfort. Tunde’s words echoed in her mind: _“Your father’s debts are now yours.”_
She had always believed her father was just a simple businessman, tough but honest. But now, piece by piece, the truth was unraveling like thread from an old wrapper. The more she pulled, the messier it became.
Kunle stepped into the room, holding two mugs of steaming tea. He handed her one and leaned against the wall, watching her carefully.
“You haven’t said much since he left,” he said softly.
Amina took the tea, but didn’t drink. “Because there’s too much to say. Kunle, I don’t even know who I am anymore. Every time I think I’ve figured it out, someone shows up with another secret from my father’s past.”
Kunle sighed. “Then maybe it’s time we dig it all up ourselves. Go to the source before they twist everything to suit their agenda.”
Amina turned to him. “You think we can find the truth before they force me into something I can’t come back from?”
Kunle met her gaze. “We won’t know until we try.”

Later That Day…
Amina and Kunle drove deep into the outskirts of Lagos, to a place she hadn’t visited in over ten years—her father's old compound in Epe. The house was dusty, the gate nearly falling off its hinges, but inside, everything was untouched. It was like time had frozen.
In her father's study, they found a locked drawer. Kunle forced it open, and inside was a single leather-bound journal.
Amina flipped through it—pages filled with messy handwriting, names, transactions, and diary-like entries. One name kept reappearing: **Chief Olatunji**.
She frowned. “Who is Chief Olatunji? He’s mentioned more than anyone else.”
Kunle's eyes widened. “That’s the man your father once worked for—before he ‘made it big’ and started his own company. People used to say your dad betrayed him.”
Amina’s heart pounded. “And if that betrayal is tied to this cartel…”
Kunle nodded. “Then this Chief might have been the one pulling the strings all along.”
Suddenly, a loud noise echoed from the back of the compound—like a window breaking.
Kunle grabbed his small pistol. “Stay here.”
Amina followed him anyway. They moved quietly, staying close to the shadows, until they spotted a figure slipping out the back gate.
“Hey!” Kunle shouted, chasing after them. But the person disappeared into the darkness, leaving only a small folder behind.
Inside were photos. Old, grainy, but clear enough—her father shaking hands with Chief Olatunji… and Tunde standing in the background, younger but unmistakably him.
Amina felt her knees weaken. “They were all in this together from the beginning.”
Kunle picked up another paper from the folder. “Look at this.” It was a contract. A deal signed years ago—promising Amina’s future in exchange for her father’s protection.
Her name was on the contract.
She gasped. “They’ve been planning this since I was a child?”
Kunle nodded grimly. “Amina, your life was never yours to begin with. You were born into this.”

That Night…
Back at their apartment, Amina sat quietly, staring at the photo of her father and Chief Olatunji. Anger bubbled inside her—not just at them, but at herself for being so blind.
“I’m going to meet this Chief,” she said firmly. “No more running. No more hiding. If I’m part of this, I deserve answers from the people who planned my life before I could live it.”
Kunle looked hesitant but nodded. “Then I’m going with you.”
Amina looked at him, her voice low. “Thank you, Kunle. But from here on, I think things are going to get a lot more dangerous.”
He offered her a small, tired smile. “Good. I don’t like things when they’re too quiet anyway.”
As they both stared out the window into the Lagos night, one thing was certain—the past was no longer behind them. It was very much alive… and it was coming for them.

Cliffhanger:
At the end of the journal, one final line sent chills through Amina’s spine:
_“If anything happens to me, don’t trust Kunle.”
