For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

The photograph was taken in the 1970s by a Nigerian photographer and later became associated with Nigeria's cultural heritage. The women depicted are believed to be from a rural community in Northern Nigeria, where carrying water, grains, and other goods in large calabashes on the head was a common daily practice.
The image became famous after the Central Bank of Nigeria selected it for the ₦10 banknote to represent:
The dignity of labour.
The role of women in Nigerian society.
Rural life and traditional culture.
The strength and resilience of ordinary Nigerians.
Why Was It Used on the ₦10 Note?
The Central Bank wanted the note to reflect everyday Nigerian life rather than only political leaders or government buildings.
The image symbolised:
1. Nigerian Cultural Identity
The calabash is an important traditional household item across many Nigerian communities.
It represents indigenous craftsmanship and culture.
2. Hard Work and Productivity
The women carrying heavy loads represent the contribution of ordinary citizens to the nation's development.
3. Recognition of Women
At a time when many currencies mainly featured men and political figures, this design highlighted the role of Nigerian women in sustaining families and communities.
4. National Unity
Although the women are from Northern Nigeria, the image represents a shared Nigerian experience of rural life found across many regions.
A Common Misconception
Many people believe these women were famous individuals or national celebrities. There is no widely accepted official record identifying them as public figures. They were chosen primarily because the photograph captured an authentic and powerful image of Nigerian daily life.
