๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ผ๐ฏ๐ฎ๐ฏ:
An impossibly wide, prehistoric tree with bark that looks like wrinkled elephant skin. Its branches reach out like gnarled fingers. In its center is a natural, eye-level hollow where the Heart of Akoma (the emerald) sits.

I didnโt just turn around. I ran.
I bolted back inside and locked the deadbolt, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. I kept staring at that photo. The woman in the red jacket has my face, my hair, my jewelryโbut sheโs standing in a version of my driveway that has a tree I cut down three years ago
I went to my closet and threw everything on the floor. No red jacket. But then, I felt something hard in the pocket of the black dress Iโm wearing right now.
I pulled out a small, brass key. It has a tag attached to it with a handwritten note: โThe basement door isnโt locked from the outside. Itโs locked from the in.โ
I live alone. I donโt have a basement. Or at least, I didnโt until I looked under the rug in the hallway and found a heavy iron ring bolted to the floorboards.
I can hear someoneโor somethingโknocking from underneath the wood. Slow. Rhythmic. Three knocks. Then a pause. Then three more.

I was walking to my front door tonight when I noticed a plain black envelope tucked into the frame. No stamp, no address. Just my name written in white ink.
Inside wasn't a letter. It was a single, high-definition photo of me... from exactly five minutes before I found the envelope. Iโm standing at the mailbox, looking at my phone, completely unaware that someone was standing right behind me.
But hereโs the part thatโs keeping me awake: In the photo, Iโm wearing a red jacket. I don't own a red jacket. Iโm wearing black tonight.
Itโs like someone took a photo of a version of me that doesn't exist in this house. Iโve locked the doors, but I canโt stop looking at the window.
What would you do? Call someone, or go back outside to see if the person with the camera is still there? โ๏ธ
