The Five Maturity Tests of Trust
I’ve had the privilege of executing projects that many people admire.
What most people see, however, is the outcome. What they rarely see is the price.
Behind every public victory is a private battle. The pressure. The uncertainty. The setbacks. The difficult conversations. The lonely decisions. The sacrifices.
We fight those battles with a smile, often sharing very little—if anything at all.
Not because we are pretending everything is fine, but because trust is earned. Over the years, I have come to realize that not everyone possesses the maturity required to carry another person’s battle.
Over time, I have learnt through the hard way that not every battle deserves as audience. These five maturity tests continue to guide my conduct:
1. Emotional Maturity — Handling Truth
Some people can’t handle certain information, let alone the experiences behind it. What you share in confidence quickly becomes material for gossip, speculation, or premature judgment. Instead of carrying the weight of another person’s reality with wisdom and discretion, they turn it into conversation. They may be intellectually curious, but they lack the emotional maturity, discernment, and capacity to responsibly hold certain truths or navigate certain levels of adversity.
The test: Can this person carry truth without turning it into entertainment?
2. Professional Maturity — Earning Recognition
Some people want instant visibility without demonstrating consistent value. They crave recognition before earning trust, seek the spotlight before mastering the work, and are quick to claim credit for outcomes they did not create alone. Rather than building competence, credibility, and contribution over time, they pursue applause without the discipline that sustains it.
The test: Does this person value contribution more than recognition?
3. Relational Maturity — Stewarding Access
Some people abuse proximity. They mistake access for entitlement, familiarity for equality, and generosity for obligation. They take privileged opportunities for granted, disregard healthy boundaries, and often fail to appreciate the responsibility that comes with being trusted. What should have been treated as a privilege gradually becomes something they expect—and eventually exploit.
The test: Can this person be trusted with access without abusing it?
4. Perspective Maturity — Understanding the Cost Behind Success
Some people admire the result but never consider the price. They expect excellence without delays, resilience without fatigue, generosity without limits, and consistent performance without acknowledging the human cost. They celebrate the visible success while remaining oblivious to the invisible sacrifices that made it possible.
The test: Can this person appreciate the price behind the performance?
5. Character Maturity — Supporting the Person, Not Just the Outcome
Some people are committed to your success only as long as it serves their interests. They celebrate your victories, enjoy the benefits of your influence, and are eager to be associated with your achievements. But when the pressure rises, the resources dry up, or the applause fades, so does their commitment. They are loyal to the outcome, not to the person. They love the fruit but have little appetite for the seasons of planting, pruning, and perseverance that produce it.
The test: Will this person remain when there is nothing to gain?
Perhaps this explains why not every battle deserves an audience.
Not every ear is mature enough for the truth.
Not every eye is mature enough for the journey.
Not every heart is mature enough for the privilege.
Discernment should determine disclosure.
Trust should determine access.
Character should determine proximity.
We must choose carefully who has access to you and your battles, because the people you trust can either help carry your burden or become part of it.
Silence is not secrecy.
Sometimes, it is wisdom.
The importance of clear communication cannot be overemphasized.
Recently, I got upset with one of my colleagues because I assigned him a job, paid him for it, and he failed to deliver on time. To make matters worse, he stopped responding to my messages. Out of frustration, I spoke to him harshly. Later, he explained that he had lost his brother, which was the reason for his silence. My response was simple: "I wish you had communicated with me." Even a brief message would have helped me understand the situation and respond differently.
This experience reminded me that communication is not just about talking it's about keeping people informed. Whether in business, leadership, relationships, or teamwork, silence often creates assumptions, while clear communication builds trust and understanding. Learn to communicate your vision, your goals, your challenges, and your expectations. Let people know where you stand and what you're working towards. A simple conversation can prevent unnecessary misunderstandings and preserve valuable relationships. Let's all strive to communicate better.
2026 has stretched me in ways I never imagined, and the growth has been massive. Every day, I find myself exposed to opportunities that I once only dreamed about. Looking back, I believe one of the most important decisions anyone can make is to identify their purpose and define how they want to live their life.
Opportunities keep unfolding, but I have also come to realize that preparation plays a huge role. When purpose meets preparation, doors begin to open in unexpected ways.
My advice to anyone who wants to live a purposeful life is simple: identify yourself, know what you truly want, and work towards it intentionally. Don't wait for validation from people before taking action. We are all on different journeys, moving at different speeds, and living our lives according to different assignments.
Stay focused. Stay intentional. Keep growing. Your opportunity may be closer than you think.
I wanted to share this through a video, but time and circumstances wouldn't permit me today, so I'll leave it here.
See you soon.
