This is a typical day at Ikorodu Ferry Terminal; yet the Lagos State Government says it does not have interest in waterways business...
A trip from Ikorodu to Victoria Island costs between 700 and 900 naira. An average patron pays or spends between 1,400 and 1,800 naira thru and fro daily.
Patrons spend a maximum duration of between 25 and 30minutes on a trip compare to the over three, four hours spend on the road, yet the state government insists it's not the way forward for a supposed smart city.
Water transport, all over the globe, is believed to be the safest form of transportation.
It's therefore, unimaginable that a state like Lagos, that claims to be a mega city, situated in, and surrounded by, water would not have a viable and lucrative means of water transportation; especially, in a traffic, if not 'standstill' or 'go slow' drenched metropolis.
Just recently, over a dozen people had died in a boat mishap. Many had blamed the local boat operator, and the over 20 patrons themselves, for not wearing live jackets. But truth be told, the government's failure to provide basic social security and/or amenities, over years, is responsible for the avoidable deaths.
We can all become monitors of public projects in our areas. There are a thousand and one abandoned projects by governments and public office holders around us, and we must start following up and monitoring their progress, to force our so-called governments and public officer holders to be accountable to us.
YOU CAN SNAP abandoned projects around you and send to [email protected] for publication on ppmg platform.
Snap every pothole, drainage, road, hospital, school and other infrastructure projects in your domain for ppmg. Always remember to send pictures with captions, stating where, who, when and the date it was taken.
PPMG verification is inevitable.
A little effort can make the difference, I believe.
