Mary Habila: A Call For Answers And Transparency The Media Angle

According to initial reports, two women, Mary Habila and her colleague Mary Baski, travelled from Kaduna to Uburu, the hometown of David Umahi, Nigeria’s Minister of Works in Ebonyi State. Reports state that one of the women later passed away at the Minister’s residence.

There are different accounts about what happened. The Minister has stated that the two women were health professionals engaged to provide care. Sahara Reporters has published a different version of events and claims to have footage related to the incident. Because the accounts do not match, the public does not yet have a clear picture of what occurred.

When such a situation arises, the most important thing is a clear and independent investigation. Families deserve to know what happened, and the public deserves to have confidence in the process. Key questions remain: What was the cause of death? Who was present? What do the official findings show? These are necessary questions, not accusations.

It is also important that we avoid rushing to conclusions or dismissing concerns. Justice and truth do not depend on political views or affiliation. They depend on facts, records, and a transparent process. If there was no wrongdoing, a proper investigation will show that. If there was, then the law should be allowed to take its course.

Mary Habila travelled from Kaduna and will not be returning home. The least we can do is ask for a thorough, open investigation so her family and the public can know the truth. May she rest in peace, and may the authorities ensure that this matter is examined fully and fairly.

Gov. Makinde Calls For UN Probe Into Oyo School Abduction: Smelling Foul Play

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has called on the United Nations and other international human rights bodies to investigate the abduction and release of a principal and school children from Oriire Local Government Area.

The incident happened on May 15 when pupils and teachers were taken from 3 schools. They were rescued and handed over to the state government on July 10 after spending 56 days in captivity. Gov. Makinde said the circumstances of the abduction were "grave and unusual" and deserve independent scrutiny.

According to the governor, the purpose of the probe is not politics but truth and justice. He said Nigerians deserve a full and transparent account, including whether there were institutional failures, negligence, or collusion. He added that this is about restoring public confidence that children can go to school safely.

The call has sparked reactions. The Presidency and Senate described the request as unnecessary and politically motivated, saying Nigerian security agencies should be allowed to conclude their work. Nigeria’s UN Representative also said the UN does not interfere in internal security matters and urged focus on victim welfare.

The question many are asking: Is the governor smelling foul play, or simply asking for transparency? Whatever the answer, the priority should be the safety of children and accountability in our schools and communities.
