Why Self-Regulation Matters for Civil Society and Media in Nigeria
As civic spaces continue to evolve, strengthening accountability, transparency, and ethical standards within Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and the media is more important than ever. Self-regulation remains a critical mechanism for building credibility, sustaining public trust, and protecting the independence of the civic sector.
In this regard, the Ethics and Good Leadership Awareness Initiative (EGLAI), with support from the European Union and in partnership with the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), convened a two-day capacity-building workshop on Self-Regulation for CSOs and the Media in the North Central region under the EU CSO-Bridge Project.
The workshop took place 10–11 March 2026 in Abuja at BonHotel Elvis, bringing together representatives from government institutions, civil society organizations, development partners, the private sector, and the media. The engagement focused on strengthening institutional accountability, improving regulatory compliance, and enhancing the contribution of CSOs to sustainable development and democratic governance.
The Network for Peace and Inclusive Development (NPID) participated as part of the Niger State delegation, contributing to dialogue on advancing ethical standards and promoting responsible civic engagement.
Strengthening self-regulation is not just about compliance—it is about building resilient institutions that can effectively serve communities, safeguard democratic values, and sustain civic space in Nigeria.
