Why is your weather changing?
Why is food becoming scarce and expensive?
Why are diseases spreading, people migrating, and economies under strain?
These are not isolated crises.
They are all connected to climate change.
So, how do we make this clear to the average citizen?
👉 Through simplified, people-centred data education.
How do we get people on board the climate action train?
👉 Through simplified, relatable data education.
How do we build a critical mass of climate justice advocates?
👉 Through simplified, accessible data education.
The truth is this:
We cannot make meaningful progress on climate action or climate justice if the majority of our people do not understand the trends, drivers, and impacts of climate change.
We also cannot honestly speak about climate justice without exposing—through clear data—the political economy of climate injustice, climate imperialism, and unjust energy transitions.
Climate justice and environmental organisations must place people at the centre of solutions—just as we demand that governments prioritise people over corporate profits.
One powerful way to do this is through popular education:
✓ Data that is simple, visual, relatable, and grounded in lived realities.
Millions—especially young people in the Global South—are eager to understand how climate change affects their lives. Yet, climate knowledge, and particularly climate justice discourse, remains locked behind technical language and elite narratives.
It’s time to remove the veil.
At the African Research Centre for Climate and Environmental Justice (ARCCEJ), we have taken a humble but bold step with the publication of:
📘 DATA FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE:
CLIMATE COLONIALISM IN AFRICA THROUGH NUMBERS AND PERSPECTIVES (2025)
This book—produced over a year of rigorous work—aims to democratise climate knowledge by presenting simplified data and grounded perspectives, with a strong focus on Africa, climate justice, and just transition.
Beyond education, this effort also seeks to challenge corporate-driven narratives and the skewed mainstream framing of climate and environmental justice.
We look forward to collaborating with climate justice advocates, activists, organisations, and movements worldwide to bring this vision to life.

New Book: DATA FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE: CLIMATE COLONIALISM IN AFRICA THROUGH NUMBERS AND PERSPECTIVES

"This book is written to engage readers seeking to understand the implications of climate change for Africa and the world. More importantly, it aims to spark deeper conversations around climate justice—moving beyond the familiar narrative that Africa is disproportionately affected and deserves more attention. While this narrative is valid and essential for climate justice advocacy, it does not fully address the deeper questions surrounding the political economy of climate change. This book, therefore, speaks directly to climate and justice activists, advocates, campaigners, researchers, and organizations about what energy transition and worsening climate conditions mean for economies in the Global South, particularly Africa.
There are many ways to stimulate these discussions. We believe that empirical data and its analysis are among the most powerful tools for meaningful engagement on climate justice and the political economy of climate change. Newcomers to the climate justice movement will find this book helpful for grasping foundational concepts, while seasoned campaigners and activists will discover valuable insights to deepen their advocacy. Researchers and organizations will find new directions for expanding knowledge and identifying fresh areas for engagement.
Researched and written over the course of a year, this book compiles relevant data across key thematic areas, with a focus on Africa’s role and experience. These themes include:
✓ Global and African trends in greenhouse gas emissions (1970–2023)
✓ Climate finance flows in Africa (2019–2023)
✓ Climate-related disasters and events in Africa (1970–2023)
✓ Funding for climate-related research in Africa (1990–2020)
✓ Adoption of renewable energy in Africa and globally (2000–2024)
✓ Critical minerals for energy transition (2019–2023)
✓ Plastic waste generation and disposal trends (2000–2019)
✓ Tree cover and
forest loss in Africa (2000–2023)"
