Underneath every manifested behavior is a need, a concern, fear, interest or motivation.
Human needs include Interests, values, hopes, desires, and wants.

The work of the Conflict resolver is to first identify the underlying need before designing any solution.

When people are asked what they need, many people reply with solutions that they think are needs, such as " I need him to ring me when he's going to be late". The need is to know he is safe. There are a variety of solutions which meet that need. Ringing when late is only one of these.

Conflict is not a problem in itself... It is what we do with it that counts. Our ability to transform conflict from being negative to positive is an Emotional Intelligence competency. You can learn to see conflict as an opportunity for change; to improve relationships; to understand peoples underlying needs and concerns and to move the relationship forward. And like Dr. Helena Cornelius of The Conflict Resolution Network would say: "Ah Conflict! What an opportunity!"
