Retaliation? Is it okay?
Yesterday, on my way back from church, something happened that really struck me. I was in a keke, and as we were about to move out, a bus suddenly drove right in front of us. He wasnāt in a hurry, he wasnāt even driving properly...he was sluggish, almost careless, blocking the road. At some point, it even seemed like he was distracted, maybe pressing his phone or counting money, I donāt know.
Because of him, another keke ahead of us couldnāt move, and of course, mine too had to stop. After several minutes of waiting and people shouting, the bus driver finally decided to turn but still so slowly, leaving no space for anyone else to pass. Out of frustration, my keke driver reversed a little, and in anger, he slammed his hand hard on the back of the bus before trying to drive off.
And that was when things took a dangerous turn. The bus driver, instead of just letting things go, tried to drive into our keke. Imagine that forgetting that my keke driver wasnāt alone. There were passengers inside. I was sitting at the side, and a lady was in front. If he had truly driven into us, it was me and that lady who would have been injured and not even my keke driver.
That moment taught me something so profound. Many times in life, when someone offends us or hurts us, sometimes our first instinct is retaliation. But in trying to hurt them back, we often end up hurting innocent people around them, people who have nothing to do with the offense. Thatās the danger of anger. Thatās the danger of Retaliation.
The bus driver was clearly wrong. He created the whole problem. But when my keke driver reacted in anger(which wasn't okay too), it provoked an even worse reaction that could have harmed others. And isnāt that how life sometimes works? Someone does us wrong, and in the heat of the moment, instead of handling it wisely, we strike back and in striking back, we hurt not only them, but everyone else connected to them.
It reminded me that retaliation never heals; it only spreads pain.
