Vandaag was weer zo’n dag die je even laat stilstaan bij hoe lang je al meedraait als veteraan in het teamspel, maar nu voor de lol — en hoe mooi het is om te zien dat de volgende generatie dezelfde passie pakt. Een skirm bij Balls & Arrows, samen met Henny Hendriks met wie ik ruim tien jaar in hetzelfde team heb gewerkt. Hij was in de andere wereld mijn Chief Human Resources Officer, Operations Manager en Navigator. Ook was mijn zoon Joris erbij, die vandaag de sniper-rol op zich nam met een “highly modified” VSR 10.

Het werd een dag die alles had: teamwork, tactische druk, momenten van pure chaos, maar vooral het soort camaraderie dat je alleen in airsoft vindt.

🔵 Team was Blue: een machine op volle toeren

Vanaf het eerste fluitsignaal stond het blauw team als één blok. De communicatie liep, iedereen pakte zijn sector en de aanvallen kwamen in golf na golf. Het resultaat mocht er zijn:
Tijdens de lunchpauze stond het al 24 - 1.
Ja, je leest het goed. Het soort score dat alleen ontstaat als iedereen tegelijk “aan” staat.

Henny en ik draaiden zoals vanouds als een team samen als assault en verdedigingsteam. Alsof die tien jaar nooit voorbij waren, pakten we de oude jachtdynamiek zo weer op: flanken, drukken, breachen, en met precisie doorpakken. En daarachter — letterlijk — mijn zoon Joris in het veld, rustig en scherp in de sniperrol, spotterloos maar met volwassen focus. Dat is een trots moment als airsofter én als vader.

🎯 Het moment van de dag

De meest memorabele actie kwam onverwachts:
We stonden met een kleine groep vast in de respawn-tent, terwijl de tegenstander de uitgang helemaal dichtdrukte, wat eigenlijk niet mag!

Geen weg vooruit, geen zicht — alleen die bekende spanning vlak voordat je of sneuvelt of iets bijzonders doet.

De bb’s kletterde op de tent. Samen met Henny en een andere teamgenoot besloten we: dit komt niet vanzelf goed, we breken eruit. Op dat moment was ook even geen Marshall in zicht.

Eén, twee, drie — push.
In één agressieve golf trokken we eruit, braken we de klem, en direct daarna sloten de rest van de spelers aan. Wat volgde was een gecoördineerde blauwe push over de hele flank. Move move move.
Resultaat: linie doorbroken, terrein gewonnen, momentum terug.

Dat soort momenten herinneren je eraan waarom je al zolang deze sport doet en hoe leuk het is om met een cakabel team op te trekken.

🤝 Organisatie & sfeer – zoals altijd bij Balls & Arrows

Balls & Arrows blijft een van die plekken waar je je nooit zorgen hoeft te maken over de randzaken:
• Personeel dat je bij naam kent
• Marshalls die vriendelijk, betrokken en scherp zijn
• Heldere briefings
• Fairplay wordt bewaakt, maar met respect
• En een veld dat steeds beter wordt

Zoals altijd: prima geregeld, top sfeer en een community waar je graag voor terugkomt.

🟦 Tot slot

Een dag met twee generaties, een oude teammaat, een sterke groep spelers en een veld waar alles klopt — dat is een dag die je bijblijft.

Voor mij voelde het als een stuk geschiedenis herbeleven, maar dan met een nieuwe laag erop: zien dat Joris dezelfde drive ontwikkelt waar wij ooit mee begonnen.

Als veteranen rennen we misschien niet meer zo hard, maar we kunnen nog steeds schieten. 😉

Precision’s Hidden Variable

When precision matters, even the smallest optical inconsistencies can cost you a clean shot. One of the most misunderstood — yet critically important — aspects of scope shooting is parallax. Often confused with focus or alignment, parallax refers to the apparent shift in the position of a target relative to the reticle when the shooter’s eye moves off-center from the optical axis of the scope.

What Is Parallax in a Scope?

Parallax occurs when the reticle and the image of the target are not focused on the same optical plane inside the scope. This leads to a visual discrepancy: if you move your head slightly side-to-side or up-down while looking through the scope, the reticle appears to “float” over the target. This means your point of aim is not necessarily your point of impact — a serious issue in precision shooting.

When Does Parallax Matter?
• Short Range (300m): In precision long-range shooting, even small parallax errors can result in significant point-of-impact shifts, especially with high-magnification optics.
• High Magnification: The higher the magnification, the more exaggerated the parallax error becomes.

Think of parallax like looking at your car’s speedometer from the passenger seat. The needle seems off because you’re viewing it from a different angle. The same principle applies in scopes — a misaligned eye introduces an angular error in your perceived point of aim.

Parallax Adjustment: AO vs Side Focus

Modern scopes deal with parallax in two ways:
• Adjustable Objective (AO): A rotating ring at the objective lens allows the shooter to set the focus and eliminate parallax at specific distances.
• Side Focus K**b: More common in tactical and high-end scopes, this is a turret on the side of the scope that adjusts internal lens groups to correct parallax without disturbing shooting position.

To test for parallax:
1. Aim at a fixed target.
2. Move your head slightly while observing the reticle.
3. If the reticle moves off target, parallax is present and needs adjustment.
