The share of Africans living in urban areas is projected to grow from 36 percent in 2010 to 50 percent by 2030. Already, fourteen countries in the continent are already experiencing water stress; and by 2025 nearly 50 percent of the population will face water stress or scarcity.
In the current edition of Africa Economic Outlook, Mapograpihcs has analyzed and represented part of this situation. In the map below, we outline wetlands that are water resources and we overlay this with the likely urban areas by 2030 (indicated from yellow to red). For e.g. the case city Tunis - we can observe how future urban development will take place over water resources used by the population in this area. In addition to population growth, this may further hamper the water availability in this area.
