Tattoos are often talked about as if they became a “cult” in recent decades—linked with rebellion, counterculture, or fashion. But here in Nepal, the story is much older and far deeper.

In the southern plains, many women have been wearing tattoos for generations. These marks weren’t about trends; they carried meaning—symbols of identity, faith, belonging, or even protection. What’s now seen as modern expression has long been part of their everyday life.

It’s a reminder that while the world may celebrate tattoos as a new wave of culture, our women in the south have been living that culture long before it was given a label. For them, tattoos weren’t statements—they were stories etched into skin.
