Some absences stay with a child forever.

Not all children get to grow up in a complete family. Some learn very early that home can become divided into different places, different routines, different lives.

People adapt. Children adapt too.
But deep inside, many still carry the quiet feeling that something important is missing

Maybe children from incomplete families feel lonelier as they grow older.

But sometimes those experiences also shape their personality, sensitivity, creativity, strength, or talents in a deeper way than people realize.

Studies show that children from incomplete or broken families are statistically more likely to struggle with anxiety, depression, loneliness, behavioral problems, or addiction later in life.

Some research says they can be nearly twice as likely to face emotional or mental health difficulties compared to children growing up with both parents together. (America First Policy Institute)

At the same time, many of these children also develop unusual emotional depth, independence, resilience, creativity, empathy, or strong survival instincts much earlier than others.

Pain doesn’t only break people.
Sometimes it shapes them too.

The Man-Machine: Tokyo – Osaka 🇯🇵

Inspired by Kraftwerk, this series explores the tragicomical life of the Japanese “Salaryman.” These are the ghosts of the city-working 14+ hour days, fueled by late-night drinks with clients, and often sleeping on the streets because a taxi home is a luxury their corporate “pyramid” won’t cover.
They are masters of “parking” themselves anywhere-on curbs, station floors, or benches. For many, the job is the only priority; wives and relationships are sidelined for the dream of a promotion that’s always five years away.
While shooting this, I lived it too. Unable to stay in my CouchSurfing flat during the day, I’d catch an hour of sleep in quiet parks before heading back out.
The Salaryman built modern Japan, but as the population shrinks and generations shift, these “human robots” are becoming figures of the past.
