"Junior basketball in New Zealand is currently stronger than it has ever been, with a rapidly growing base of talented young players entering the game. Unfortunately, the same level of opportunity does not exist within senior basketball, where there is often a bottleneck in player development and progression. Only a select few athletes are chosen to continue their basketball journey at the next level, leaving many talented players without a pathway to further develop their potential.

In countries such as the United States and Australia, there is a much stronger transition from junior to senior basketball, particularly for players between the ages of 20–25. This age group is often highly athletic, possesses a solid skill foundation, and still has significant upside through continued development of basketball IQ, game experience, and skill refinement.

The Pacific Basketball League (PBL) aims to bridge this gap by providing emerging senior players with a competitive platform to continue growing and developing their game. The league will create meaningful opportunities for players to compete at a high level, improve their abilities, and position themselves for potential selection into the NZNBL and other professional pathways."
