Create your own taonga (treasured object) with the guidance of our expert carvers, using authentic pounamu (New Zealand greenstone). You don’t need any experience - you’ll shape the stone yourself, step by step, with our support.

This workshop is designed for carvers with next to no carving experience in mind, but previous carving experience is highly recommended. This workshop will take up to 2 full days of 6-7 hrs due to the complexity of the form. In this workshop we will cover the cultural history of the form, the tools and skills necessary for stone-carving and will guide participants through the process of creating a manaia pounamu. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a fully completed and bound manaia to take home.

Pekapeka Kahurangi - Greenstone Bat Pendant
https://shortlink.store/oece6bnkpg3d

The name pekapeka comes from the native bat of Aotearoa. With eyes in both the physical and spiritual realms, the pekapeka is a formidable kaitiaki (protector). Worn on special occasions, it is carved as twin outward facing manaia (guardians) connected by a single body. It is said that Māui-tikitiki-a-Taranga, the great trickster, would take on the form of the pekapeka.

This pekapeka was carved by Jeremy Walsh from kahurangi pounamu sourced from Marsden of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 86mm by 50mm, has a semi-gloss finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
