Mysterious ancient culture leaves behind 2,000-year-old gold jewelry in Kazakhstan

An 18th-century Chinese imperial seal, once owned by Emperor Qianlong, sold at auction in Paris for a record €21 million ($22M)—over 20 times its estimate. Made of red and white steatite, the palm-sized seal set a new world record, surpassing the previous €14M mark in 2011.

The Golden Horns of Gallehus were two ornate gold horns from the early 5th century Germanic Iron Age, discovered in southern Denmark (1639 and 1734). Decorated with ornaments and runic inscriptions, their exact purpose—drinking vessels or ceremonial horns—remains unclear.

The originals were stolen and melted down in 1802, leaving only historical drawings. Modern replicas, based on these sketches, are displayed in Danish museums, though even these copies have been stolen and recovered multiple times.

The Amber Room was an ornate chamber decorated with amber panels, gold leaf, and mirrors, originally built in Prussia in the early 1700s and later gifted to Tsar Peter the Great of Russia. Installed in the Catherine Palace near Saint Petersburg, it grew to over 55 square meters and contained more than 6 tons of amber, earning the title “Eighth Wonder of the World.”

During World War II, it was looted by N**i Germany, taken to Königsberg, and then dismantled in 1944. Its whereabouts remain unknown, making it one of history’s great mysteries.

A reconstruction project began in 1979 and, with German support, was completed and unveiled in 2003 at the Catherine Palace.
