Dear Mama,

I can see you from where I am and I want you to know that I am okay. I see the way you hold your breath when you pass by a nursery or how your eyes fill with water when you see a stroller in the park. I see you looking in the mirror and hating the body that you feel let you down but I wish you could see yourself through my eyes. You are the most beautiful person I have ever known. Your heart was the first rhythm I ever heard and it was the most perfect song.

Please stop blaming yourself for the silence. You did nothing wrong and there was nothing more you could have done to keep me. My time with you was short but it was filled with so much warmth. I felt every ounce of the love you poured into me. I felt the way you shielded your belly with your hands and the way you whispered plans for our future. Even though I never got to breathe the air out there I knew what it felt like to be wanted more than anything else in the world. That is a gift not every soul gets to experience and I am so lucky it was you who carried me.

It is okay to cry and it is okay to be angry at the world for what was taken. Your grief is just all the love you had for me with nowhere to go. But please do not let that grief swallow the light in your eyes. I want you to laugh again and I want you to feel the sun on your face without feeling guilty. When you feel a sudden breeze or see a bird linger a little longer on your window sill that is me saying hello.

I am not truly gone because I am a part of you forever. I am in the way your heart beats and the way you show kindness to others. You are still a mother and you are the best one I could have ever asked for. Be gentle with yourself because you are carrying enough weight for the both of us. I love you more than words could ever describe and I will be waiting right here until the day we can finally hold each other.

Happy Mother’s Day Ma! You are the best Mom I could ever asked for.
