Seventeen people have died following a powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck northern Cebu late Tuesday, September 30.
Thirteen of the victims were from Bogo City, including nine adults and four children, while four others were reported in nearby San Remigio.
The quake hit during a basketball game at the San Remigio Sports Complex and Recreation Center, causing parts of the building to collapse.
Spectators scrambled for safety, and some were trapped under falling debris. Rescue teams have since freed several of those trapped.
As of 2:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 1, the Cebu Provincial Information Office (PIO) confirmed the fatalities and said that search and rescue operations are ongoing.
Officials are also fast-tracking the delivery of bottled water and other emergency aid to affected communities.
Local authorities in San Remigio have recommended declaring a State of Calamity to accelerate relief efforts, mobilize resources, and ensure residents’ safety.
The municipal Sangguniang Bayan is expected to hold an emergency session to approve the declaration.
