As of January 1, 2026, S-100 capable ECDIS systems can be legally installed and used under IMO Resolution MSC.530(106)/Rev.1.
By January 1, 2029, every newly installed ECDIS must be S-100 compliant. That includes retrofits and replacements.
Here is what is actually changing for the captain on the bridge.
S-100 replaces the current S-57 ENC format with a new framework that supports far richer data layers:
- S-101: New electronic navigational charts
- S-102: Bathymetric surface data
- S-104: Water level information
- S-111: Surface current data
- S-124: Navigational warnings
- S-129: Under-keel clearance management
Modern S-100 systems are designed as dual-fuel, capable of displaying both S-57 and S-101 charts during the transition.
But the practical impact is this.
The screen you have looked at for years is going to look different.
The data behind it is going to be richer and more complex.
The update cycle is going to be faster.
Existing S-57 systems already in operation do not need to be replaced. But Flag State inspectors will expect you to understand whatever system is on your bridge.

🚢 The Williamson Turn – Classic MOB Recovery Maneuver
When a Man Overboard (MOB) incident occurs, every second counts. The Williamson Turn is a standard, reliable maneuver used by merchant vessels to return the ship to the exact point where the person fell overboard.
How the Williamson Turn Works:
1 Initial Action — As soon as MOB is reported, put the rudder hard-over to the side of the fall (usually port) and note the initial heading (000°T in the diagram).
2 Deviation Check — When the ship has deviated 60° from the original course (reaching approximately 300°T), shift the rudder hard-over to the opposite side (starboard).
3 Steady Up — Continue the turn until the ship reaches the reciprocal heading (180° from original course). The vessel will now be heading back along a parallel track toward the MOB position.
Key distances:
• Total maneuver displacement ≈ 8 cables (1.4 km)
• Turning circle diameter ≈ 6 cables (1.1 km)
This maneuver is particularly effective in good visibility and moderate sea conditions. It brings the ship back to the casualty’s position with the final heading reciprocal to the original course, allowing the ship to approach the MOB slowly and safely for recovery.
Mastering the Williamson Turn is essential for every watchkeeping officer.
Stay safe at sea.

Master Mariner – The Final Authority at Sea
Command. Responsibility. Leadership.
The Master Mariner stands as the ultimate decision-maker onboard any vessel — the one who leads, decides, controls, and protects both crew and cargo across the world’s oceans.
From the bridge command to precise navigation and safety protocols, from overseeing complex cargo operations to managing critical port entries with pilots and tugs, the Master’s role is all-encompassing. In moments of emergency, clear communication and decisive crew leadership become the difference between crisis and safety.
Every voyage demands unwavering authority, sharp judgment, and profound accountability. The Master Mariner doesn’t just command a ship — he commands respect, trust, and the highest standards of maritime excellence.
LEAD → DECIDE → CONTROL → PROTECT
Honouring the men who bear the ultimate responsibility at sea.

Displacement vs Deadweight
Understanding ship weight is basic… but many still mix it up ⚓
Displacement is the ship’s total weight in water, while Deadweight shows what the ship can safely carry.
One defines the ship itself, the other defines its capacity.
Simple concept, but critical for every seafarer to get right. 🛳️
