If a child’s writing sounds too flat, the problem is often not the idea.

It is the verbs.

Instead of:
The man went across the room.

Try:
The man hurried across the room.
or
The man wandered across the room.

One stronger verb can do a lot of work.

One thing I never get tired of seeing is this moment: when a child realizes an idea in their head can become something real on the page.

Now that is a fun challenge.
And it forces children to use details instead of labels.
