What is co-operative learning and describe its strategies

Cooperative learning is an instructional approach that involves students working together in groups to achieve common learning goals. The primary objective of cooperative learning is to promote positive interdependence, individual accountability, equal participation, and the development of social and interpersonal skills.

Here are some common strategies used in cooperative learning:

Jigsaw Strategy: This strategy involves dividing students into small groups, with each member of the group becoming an expert in one particular topic or sub-topic. Afterward, students switch groups to share their knowledge with others, thereby creating a complete picture of the topic.

Think-Pair-Share: In this strategy, students are first given a problem or a question, then asked to think about it individually. They then pair up with a partner to discuss their ideas, and finally, the pairs share their ideas with the whole class.

Group Investigation: This strategy involves assigning a topic to a group of students, who then work collaboratively to research and gather information about the topic. Each member of the group is responsible for a particular aspect of the investigation, and they share their findings with the rest of the group.

Round Robin: In this strategy, students take turns sharing their ideas or answers with their group members. Each student is given a set amount of time to contribute, and this process continues until all students have had an opportunity to participate.

Numbered Heads Together: This strategy involves dividing students into groups and assigning each group a number. The teacher then poses a question or problem, and each group works together to find the answer. When the teacher calls out a number, one member from each group stands up to share their group's answer.

These strategies aim to promote collaborative learning, increase student engagement, and enhance critical thinking skills. They also provide opportunities for students to develop interpersonal skills such as communication, teamwork, and leadership.
