Trochę zaskakujące patrząc na charakter profilu, więc tym bardziej jest nam miło.

WHERE INNOCENCE DIED – Shades Of Memories (Godz Ov War, CD/DL,.2025)

The history of Where Innocence Died stretches back to 1992 where the band was then known as Nemorensis Rex. Hailing from Kielce, Poland, they went on hiatus in 1998 only be resurrected under their current moniker in 2021. Featuring former Nemorensis Rex amongst their numbers (Aleksandra (piano) and Danthe (guitar, bass, vocals)), they were joined by vocalist Adrian two years later. As such, Where Innocence Died are tethered tightly to their past, yet they are not resting on past glories and along with a new name have taken a slight musical detour, introducing darker shades that merge goth, doom and heavy metal into a cohesive whole. Getting the career of Where Innocence Died off to a great start is Shades Of Memories, a four tracker that suggests much goodness.

There’s a cinematic quality to Where Innocence Died’s sound and if proof were needed, look no further that introduction ‘Anniversary’, which is 98 seconds of ethereal beauty. In a move that will characterise this release, tone and timber are employed to great effect and will slowly ingratiate themselves into the listener’s physiology, becoming part of their inner being. Seguing into the following ‘Funeral’ we are greeted by feet crunching gravel and a few bars of Chopin’s ‘Funeral March’, all of which conspire to create an otherworldly sensation, as if we have stepped into Juraj Herz’s The Cremator. The result is a song that lulls us into a false sense of security, meaning that when the guitars and drums kick in, they kick in hard. However, heaviness is just one aspect of Where Innocence Died; they are a multifaceted band who use loud to contrast the silent and sorrow to accentuate relief. It’s an approach which gives them an exorbitant amount of freedom and they put it to good use, they don’t stay in one place for long, weaving a rich tapestry that flows smoothly from one scene to the next.

If there’s one word that would sum up this release then I guess it would be “sorrowful”. There’s an overarching feeling of loss that permeates this release, that which has been forever cast into the void and cannot be retrieved. It might be dark and gloomy, but that doesn’t make it unappealing, quite the opposite. In fact, that which hides in the shadows and which exists beyond the veil that separates this world from the next is undoubtedly far more interesting than the bright and shiny music that infests our radio and television sets. Four tracks that should be consumed as one to fully appreciate the musical journey it takes us on, Shades Of Memories signposts big things for this Polish crew.
