The first mention of oranges dates back to 2400 BC. This plant originated in China: it is believed that the orange is a hybrid of a mandarin and a pomelo.

Orange was brought to Europe by Portuguese merchants. Europeans liked this fruit so much that they began to grow oranges on their own in special greenhouses. By the way, the word "orange" itself has Dutch roots - it comes from appelsien (Chinese apple).
