PFD and P&ID are two of the most important documents in process engineering, but many beginners often confuse them.
A PFD β Process Flow Diagram β shows how the process works. It gives a simplified view of the main equipment, process streams, flow rates, pressure, temperature, and mass & energy balance.
A P&ID β Piping & Instrumentation Diagram β goes much deeper. It shows how the system will actually be built, controlled, operated, and maintained, including piping, valves, instruments, control loops, drains, vents, and equipment connections.
In simple words:
PFD explains the process.
P&ID explains how the process will be operated.
In industrial projects, detailed engineering, construction, operation, and maintenance activities are strongly based on the P&ID.
