Reinforcement Bar Distribution in a Rectangular Concrete Column
1. Number of Bars:
Examples : 8 bars with a diameter of 18 mm have been selected.
2. How to Distribute:
• Bars are usually placed along the edges of the column, as the compressive force acts on the entire cross-section.
• In rectangular columns, bars are positioned at the four corners, and the remaining bars are evenly distributed along the sides.
3. Distribution of the eight Bars:
• 4 bars are placed at the four corners.
• The remaining 4 bars are distributed at the midpoints of the longer sides or according to the design and available space.
4. Spacing and Concrete Cover:
• A concrete cover of 25 to 40 mm should be left between the bars and the column surface to protect the steel from corrosion and to properly fix the bars inside the concrete.
5. Stirrups (Ties):
• Steel wires (stirrups) are wrapped around the bars to prevent slippage and to strengthen the column against bending and shear forces.
• Stirrups are usually square-shaped, spaced 100 to 150 mm apart.
“Strong foundations build strong structures — just as strong effort builds lasting success.
