African Proverb: Fire does not give birth to fire but ashes

Fire in this context also represents bitterness or unforgiveness while ashes speak of death or destruction. Putting them together the proverb tells us that bitterness or unforgiveness often leads to death and destruction. With bitterness in your heart we can never mature in life. Bitterness is a poison of the soul. To hold bitterness in your heart against someone is like taking in poison and hoping it will harm the person. The story is told of two shopkeepers who were bitter rivals. They spent each day keeping track of each other’s business. If one got a customer, he would smile triumphantly at his rival. One night an angel appeared to one of the shopkeepers in a dream and said, “I will give you anything you ask, but whatever you receive, your competitor will receive twice as much. Would you like to be wealthy? You will be wealthy, but your neighbor will be twice as rich. Do you want to live a long and healthy life? This you can have. But your neighbor's life will be longer and healthier.Whatever is granted to you, your neighbor will be granted twice as much.
