đź’§ When Branding Meets Sacred Water
A beauty brand named a face mist after Mami Wata.

TikTok split into camps.
Some warned of spirits. Others saw reclamation.
What this debate reveals goes deeper than skincare, it’s about how the sacred travels, mutates, and survives commerce.
co was founded by Marie Kouadio Amouzame (French-Ivorian) and Alice Lin Glover (Taiwanese-American).

Their Mami Wata Mist restores the skin barrier, and reopens a conversation about what happens when water, worship, and wellness meet on a Sephora shelf.
African waters already had guardians: Yemoja, Olokun, Oshun…
Mami Wata, the term came later: born of collision, European mermaids, Hindu imagery, African cosmology. A syncretic spirit who crossed oceans with the enslaved and adapted to survive.
She’s been adored, feared, commercialized.
A mirror of wealth, desire, and spiritual autonomy.

So when her name appears on a beauty product, the tension resurfaces:
Reclamation or extraction?
Visibility or commodification?
Spiritual homage or branding strategy?
Subtile doesn’t choose sides, we hold the complexity.
Because Mami Wata, like water itself, refuses containment.
What’s your position?
