WELCOME TO OUR SERIES OF UNBELIEVABLE STORIES OF UNIVERSITY STUDENT AT MASS COMMUNICATION THAT WILL BE GRADUATING THIS DECEMBER.

I never had the opportunity to pursue university education. I forced it.

Where I come from, acquiring tertiary education is a privilege – I'd say, save me, no one has been lucky to be enrolled to the uni.

Sad to say, my mother never underwent through classroom education but is so enthusiastic about her children going to school and acquiring what she never had. She'd usually tell me that she had always wanted to attend school but her parents didn't give her the opportunity, something, she says, she'd not forgive her parents for.

She knows the value of education equally as my father who stopped at O'Level. I also admire his ingenuity and he is the person who usually recommends books for me to read. Whenever we spend time together, he'd always narrate books he had read and also folklore that serves as life's lessons.

In 2022, I got admitted to FBC the same year my father retired from the military. He had served the military for nearly 35 years and had fought both Sierra Leone's civil conflict and the Liberian war. He is an experienced retired soldier.

Because he was trying to get his retirement benefits, one of his good friends, a late man now, loaned him the money, so I could pay my fees in full. The rest is history.

During my formative days at the Faculty of Communication, Media and Information Studies (formerly Mass Communication) things were really difficult, as I received only Nle200 per month – Nle100 after two weeks. It was obviously not enough.

What I did do to survive?

I survived through some of my colleagues in class. I am someone who is passionate about teaching, so some colleagues would pay me mostly after I either do their assignments, guide them to do it and also tutor them on the modules considered difficult.

I and a few other colleagues started organizing tutorials – from year 1 to 4. There, our classmates paid a little sum to be part.

There were days when I had money only enough for one-way transport fare. Smartly, I'd wake up very early and trekked from my home to Model Junction where I'd wait for the bus that only cost Nle4 and later Nle5. The rest, they say, is history. By the time I jumped on the bus, my body sweated profusely, which mostly led to interrogation from friends: "Did you trek to this place?" I would dismiss "it is part of my DNA to sweat".

Subsequently, I faced the most difficult times during my year two days. An incident occured that almost ruined my being to the Honours class but as fate would have, that academic year became my best. I topped my class with a CGPA of 3.92 combining both semesters. I am the only student in class who has ever had higher grades than Mahmoud Jalloh – I'd say he is one between the two of the smartest people I've sat in class with.

Among but not limited to what I attained so far at the citadel:
- Public Relations Officer – Koinadugu and Falaba Student Union
- Public Relations Officer – The West Africa Methodist Collegiate OldBoys' Association - FBC Chapter
- Vice President – The West Africa Methodist Collegiate Old Boys' Association
- Campaign Manager – Team Tamba Mattai, MACOSA
- Chief Minister and Ambassador-at-Large, MACOSA
- Highest CGPA – Year 2
- Highest CGPA Department of Media – Year 2 and 3.
- Top in Communication Skills(72%) and Communication Law(96%) second semester second year
- Top in Research Proposal(76%) – Year 3.

The foregoing is not to brag but one to inspire you – no matter where you come from, if you dream, you can achieve it if you set your heart to it.

Today, I am proud to be a role model among my peers in my community.

Understand that you don't achieve greatness alone!

Despite being among the best student in my class, there were times I listened patiently to what others said.

Also, there were many ways I solicited help from colleagues – many, especially the ladies, would give me money and hope as though as I were their brother. My journey at FBC becomes even more memorable with the circle of friends I built. Sama James Tengbeh(in fact, he has been a brother since day one), Samba Kelfa, Donald Mac Benga, Abdul Bassir Alghali, Mathias Chebu Gblah, Nafisatu Olayinka Deen, Nasurulia Barrie, Haja Aminta Sillah and a host of other members of Team Excellence, a study group and those whose names not mentioned but know we have each other's back. A special citation to a sister FBC blessed me with, Gwendolyn Blessing Coker. That lady is both a blessing and an inspiration. May God bless her.

Mass Communication Students' Association (MACOSA) has once again affirmed its enduring commitment to the welfare and advancement of its members.

Yesterday's Sign-Out Ceremony, already the subject of widespread commendation, marked a defining milestone in the academic trajectory of the graduating Class of 2026. Far transcending the conventions of ceremonial observance, the event constituted a formal recognition of years devoted to intellectual rigor, perseverance, sacrifice, and personal transformation a fitting conclusion to the demanding yet formative experience of university education.

The Class of 2026 has established itself among the most distinguished cohorts in the faculty's history, its cohesion, ingenuity, and meticulousness manifest in the bespoke Sign-Out T-shirts conceived, designed, and produced from China for the occasion. Each garment, bearing the emblem of MACOSA, stood as a tangible expression of collective identity and enduring institutional pride.

Particular commendation is owed to the outgoing MACOSA President, Tamba Mattia and the members of the executive team, whose coordination and foresight ensured an occasion of exceptional quality and distinction. Their tenure is characterized by purposeful leadership, humility, and an unrelenting dedication to the interests of the student body qualities that have left a lasting imprint on the Association's institutional legacy.

As the graduating class advances into the next phase of professional and personal development, MACOSA extends its sincerest congratulations and enduring goodwill. May the knowledge, values, and experiences cultivated within these halls continue to guide your pursuit of excellence in the dynamic and ever-evolving discipline of communication and media. We hold every confidence that you will distinguish yourselves as worthy ambassadors of the faculty and as agents of meaningful contribution to society at large.

One of the promises made by the current executive, led by President Tamba Mattia, was to give MACOSA a standard constitution that would strengthen the association and guide its operations for years to come.

Today, after fulfilling all the necessary processes, consultations, reviews, and adoption procedures, we are proud to formally present the signed and adopted MACOSA Constitution to the administration and students within the faculty.

This document is a step towards a more organized, transparent, and progressive association. It reflects the commitment, sacrifices, and determination of a president and an executive that truly believe MACOSA deserves better and can become even greater.

As a leadership, we came in with the mindset of not just occupying offices, but leaving behind something meaningful that future students will benefit from. We believe leadership should be seen in actions, not only words, and this constitution is one of the many efforts we are making to build a stronger, more admirable, and enviable MACOSA that every Mass Communication student will be proud to identify with.
