What is cofferdam?

A cofferdam is a temporary structure built to create a dry work environment below the water level in order to facilitate construction, repair, or inspection of structures such as bridges, dams, or pipelines in aquatic environments.

Conceptually, a cofferdam typically consists of sheet piles, steel plates, or concrete walls driven or placed into the ground to form an enclosed area. This enclosed area is then dewatered using pumps or other methods to keep the water out and create a dry space for construction activities to take place.

Cofferdams are often used in areas where it is impractical or impossible to work underwater for extended periods due to safety concerns or the need for precision in construction. Once the work is completed, the cofferdam can be dismantled, and the water allowed to flow back into the area.

In addition to providing a dry work environment, cofferdams also help to prevent water from seeping into the construction site, which can compromise the integrity of the structure being built or repaired. They are essential in various civil engineering projects where water control is necessary for successful completion.
