Government to Charge Riek Machar and Seven Others Over Nasir Fighting
The Government of South Sudan has announced that First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny, alongside seven other accused persons, will face multiple charges including murder, conspiracy and common intention, terrorism and financing terrorism, treason, destruction of public property and military assets, and crimes against humanity.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Justice, investigations into the events surrounding the Nasir fighting in March 2025 have been concluded, and formal charges have been communicated to the accused. The ministry confirmed that the case will be referred to a competent court for trial.

The Ministry of Justice emphasized that the charges represent “serious violations against the state authority and the people of South Sudan.”
The announcement marks a significant escalation in the government’s response to the March clashes, which left widespread destruction and heightened political tensions in Upper Nile State.
