Kiir Travels to South Africa for Bilateral Talks with Ramaphosa

Juba, March 14, 2026 – Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of South Sudan, departed Juba on Saturday for an official visit to South Africa, where he is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with President Cyril Ramaphosa.

According to Presidential Press Secretary Arek Aldo Deng, the visit aims to strengthen the long-standing relations between the two nations and expand cooperation in key areas such as economic development, institutional capacity building, and skills development.

The trip follows a recent meeting between Presidents Kiir and Ramaphosa in Addis Ababa and comes after an earlier visit by South Sudan’s Presidential Special Envoy to South Africa.

Officials say the discussions are expected to deepen diplomatic ties and advance shared interests between the two countries.

SPLM Secretary-General Says South Sudan Will Not Go Backward Despite Health Funding Cuts

Akol Paul Koordit, the Secretary-General of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), has expressed confidence that South Sudan will remain resilient despite concerns over possible hospital closures due to reductions in international health funding.

Speaking during a recent meeting, Dr. Koordit said he had discussed with an international figure the possibility that hospitals in rural areas could shut down as donors withdraw support.

He recalled a personal experience from 1998 in Madubai village near Meridi, where he suffered a severe case of malaria at a time when there were no hospitals in the area.

According to Dr. Koordit, an elderly woman in the village advised him to chew the bitter roots of a small tree as traditional medicine, which he said helped him recover.

He said the story reflects the resilience of local communities even in difficult circumstances.

“The closure of hospitals should not discourage us. The fact that we even have hospitals today is already progress, because in the past we had none,” he said.

Dr. Koordit added that the country remains determined to move forward.

“We are going nowhere. We will remain here. This country will not disappear, and it will never go backward again,” he said.
