Update: Proceedings of the Twelfth (12) Session of the Sham Trial of H.E. Dr. Riek Machar and Seven Other Detainees from the SPLM/A (IO)
20 October 2025
Today, the so-called Special Court on the Nasir Incident held its twelfth session at Freedom Hall in Juba, continuing the politically motivated trial initiated by the SPLM (IG) against First Vice President H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon and other senior members of the SPLM/A (IO).
The prosecution continued its examination of the lead investigator, Maj. Gen. Basilio Thomas Wani, Police Commissioner of Northern Bahr El Ghazal State, following the conclusion of his initial testimony. In the previous session, his testimony focused on baseless allegations against the first accused, National Minister of Petroleum Hon. Puot Kang Chol, whom he accused of involvement in the Nasir attack by allegedly sending $30,000 to mobilize the Armed Youth (aka White Army) to assault the SSPDF garrison of Wech-Yar-Adiu in Nasir.
Today’s questioning further emphasized premeditated and baseless evidence, in a desperate attempt to establish a false connection between the second through eighth accused and the Nasir Incident—an incident that the SPLM (IG) itself orchestrated to abrogate the peace agreement. The allegations are as follows:
1. The second accused, businessman Mam Pal Dhuor, was portrayed as a financier and liaison. The SPLM (IG) investigator alleged that Mr. Dhuor facilitated money transfers to support operations and shared casualty lists via WhatsApp with commanders of the Armed Youth.
2. The third accused, Hon. Gatwech Lam Puoch, was accused of disseminating intelligence and aiding Armed Youth mobilization. The SPLM (IG) investigator claimed that, during a press conference in Juba, Hon. Puoch opposed the SSPDF’s “unilateral decision” to deploy forces to Nasir, arguing that these forces were not purely SSPDF but included Agwelek and Abushok militias, rather than unified forces.
3. The fourth accused, Lt. Gen. Gabriel Duop Lam, was accused of sharing classified military information and failing to alert SSPDF command—despite his position as SSPDF Deputy Chief of Defense Forces—about imminent attacks. The SPLM (IG) investigator claimed that Gen. Duop discussed procuring machine-gun rounds with SPLA (IO) field commanders in late 2024.
4. The fifth accused, H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, was accused of authorizing local teams that mobilized the Armed Youth for coordinated attacks on the SSPDF base, then failing to prevent the killing of stranded SSPDF soldiers. The SPLM (IG) investigator alleged that Dr. Machar communicated with then-Nasir County Commissioner James Gatluak Lew and SPLA-IO commanders, persuading SSPDF officers to abandon their weapons inside their Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) before boarding UN helicopters—actions that allegedly enabled the Armed Youth and SPLA (IO) forces to seize the weapons and execute Gen. David Major Dak and other SSPDF soldiers.
5. The sixth accused, Brig. Gen. Camilo Gatmai Kel, was accused of sharing official documents without authorization and facilitating the movement of unlicensed weapons linked to the attacks.
6. The seventh accused, Lt. Mading Yak Riek, was accused of sharing classified details of SSPDF troop movements with SPLA (IO) commanders via WhatsApp. The SPLM (IG) investigator claimed this information was retrieved from Mading’s phone before being deleted.
7. The eighth accused, Dominic Gatgok Riek, was alleged to have circulated, via WhatsApp, a list of SPLA-IO officers promoted after the Nasir garrison attack as a “reward for victory.”
The lead defense lawyer, Dr. Geri Raimondo Legge, repeatedly and strongly objected to the prosecution’s evidence, arguing that the questions were leading and prejudicial. However, most objections were overruled by the presiding judge of the sham court, James Alala Deng.
The sham court adjourned today’s session to Wednesday, October 22, 2025, for further proceedings.
The SPLM/A (IO) reiterates its rejection of the so-called Special Court, which it views as a mechanism created to abrogate the Revitalized Agreement and to conduct a political witch-hunt against Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon and the SPLM/A (IO). Consequently, calls for the immediate and unconditional release of H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon and all SPLM/A (IO) detainees.
