A mobile money operator in Juba, identified as Isaac M. D. Gurech, has raised alarm after allegedly losing millions of South Sudanese pounds in a sophisticated counterfeit US dollar scam.

According to Isaac, a man visited his mobile money center on Sunday morning around 9:25 AM and requested to exchange $1,500 (about SSP 9.8 million). The suspect reportedly appeared calm and trustworthy, allowing the operator to verify the notes before completing the transaction.

However, moments after the exchange, Isaac realized the money was counterfeit. When he attempted to pursue the suspect, he allegedly discovered an accomplice waiting outside on a motorbike. Both escaped with the cash.

Isaac has now warned fellow agents and business owners to be extremely cautious when handling large transactions with unfamiliar clients, urging stricter verification to avoid similar losses.

“Strange things are happening in Juba,” he cautioned.
