From 1 June 2026, SARS enforcement of the SATMS/TMS customs declaration system officially comes into effect for foreign-registered vehicles entering, leaving, or currently inside South Africa.

This is now a legal compliance requirement — not optional.

9 DAYS TO GO UNTIL IMPLEMENTATION

Effective 1 June 2026, all foreign-registered vehicles entering or leaving South Africa will be required to complete an online temporary importation declaration through the SARS Traveller Management System (TMS/SATMS).

As the implementation deadline approaches, travellers should prepare for:

• Increased border congestion
• Long queues at ports of entry
• Delays caused by incomplete documentation
• Increased customs inspections and compliance checks
• High demand for declaration assistance and guidance

Many travellers are still unaware that the new process may require:

• Online declaration submission
• Supporting documentation uploads
• Temporary importation reference generation
• Customs compliance verification before travel

Important temporary importation considerations:

• SARS may issue temporary import permits valid for up to six months
• Multiple border crossings may be permitted within the approved validity period
• Customs duty and VAT exemptions may apply under qualifying temporary import provisions
• Work permit holders, students and long-term travellers may fall under additional customs rebate provisions, including Rebate Item 490.00 where applicable
• Foreign-registered vehicles may not be sold, transferred or disposed of in South Africa without SARS approval

Travellers and vehicle owners are strongly encouraged to prepare early and familiarise themselves with the new SARS requirements before travelling.
